DNAinfo: 3-D Printing Company MakerBot Expands Into Massive Sunset Park Factory

3-D printer giant, MakerBot, recently celebrated the grand opening of their 170,000 square foot space in Sunset Park’s Industry City.  While the company has been at IC since 2011, they recently signed an expansion that will occupy 3 floors.  DNAinfo’s Nikhita Venugopal covered the story.

Per the article:

SUNSET PARK — 3-D printer companyMakerBot inaugurated its new Sunset Park factory in Industry City on Wednesday, an expansion that will double its production capacity, officials announced.

The company moved to a smaller space in Industry City in 2011 but has now increased its footprint to 170,000 square feet spread over three floors, spokesman Navin Raj said.

“It’s a much more efficient and cost-effective form of manufacturing,” he added.

The factory’s grand opening took place Wednesday morning in a ribbon-cutting ceremony with Borough President Eric Adams, MakerBot CEO Jonathan Jaglom and education officials.

“The new MakerBot factory is a state-of-the-art facility with a focus on lean manufacturing and efficiency, making it one of the most advanced factories in New York City and in the global 3-D printing industry,” Jaglom said in a statement.

MakerBot, a subsidiary of Stratasys Ltd., was founded in 2009 on Dean Street in Brooklyn and specializes in 3-D printers, parts, accessories and other devices. Along with the new factory, the company has a research and development facility nearby as well as a corporate office in Downtown Brooklyn.

MakerBot’s line of products will be assembled at the Sunset Park factory before being shipped out, Raj said.

Its customers have included engineers, educators, architects and large-scale industrial users.
