As of this month, yes. Anthropic announced that Claude now weaves an invisible marker into the text it produces and attaches a signed record of origin to the files it generates. The marking applies to every Claude product, and Anthropic is applying it worldwide rather than only in the markets that prompted it. The company signed a European code of practice on transparency of AI-generated content and decided to ship the same behavior everywhere. Google, OpenAI and others are moving in the same direction. Assume that within a year, most of what comes out of a major model carries something.","spans":[{"start":63,"end":72,"type":"hyperlink","data":{"link_type":"Web","url":"https://www.searchenginejournal.com/anthropic-claude-watermarks-eu-ai-act-code/585355/","target":"_blank"}},{"start":363,"end":428,"type":"hyperlink","data":{"link_type":"Web","url":"https://digital-strategy.ec.europa.eu/en/policies/code-practice-ai-generated-content","target":"_blank"}}],"direction":"ltr"},{"type":"paragraph","text":"The common thread is easy to miss, so here it is up front: these marks do not record who wrote something. They record that a model touched it. If a member of your team drafts a press release and runs it through Claude to tighten the third paragraph, that release now carries a mark, and so does a release Claude wrote end to end while nobody read it closely. The two are indistinguishable to the mark. That should tell you something about where the real line is. It was never human versus AI. It is reviewed versus not reviewed, and named versus anonymous, which is the thing we have been saying since well before there was a watermark to argue about.","spans":[],"direction":"ltr"},{"type":"heading2","text":"Does Claude Leave Watermarks? Yes, in Two Different Ways","spans":[],"direction":"ltr"},{"type":"paragraph","text":"The first kind is a text watermark. When Claude generates writing, it subtly biases its own word choices in a pattern that software can recognize later but a reader cannot see. It does not change the meaning or the quality of the sentence. Because the pattern lives in the words themselves, it survives a copy-and-paste into an email, a CMS, or a slide, and Anthropic says it can survive some editing.","spans":[],"direction":"ltr"},{"type":"paragraph","text":"The second kind applies to files. When Claude produces an image or a graphic (a .png, a .jpg, an .svg) it attaches a signed record of where the file came from. That record follows the C2PA standard, an open format backed by Adobe, Google, Microsoft, OpenAI, the BBC, Sony and TikTok, among others. Think of it as a nutrition label stapled to the file. It says what produced this and whether anyone has altered it since.","spans":[{"start":184,"end":197,"type":"hyperlink","data":{"link_type":"Web","url":"https://c2pa.org/","target":"_blank"}}],"direction":"ltr"},{"type":"paragraph","text":"Two things about the scope are worth knowing. It is not an EU-only feature, and it is not a consumer-app-only feature, because the marks apply across Claude's products and through the major cloud platforms that resell the models. And it is not retroactive in any complete way. Models released before this year are still being updated to support marking, so a piece of content from six months ago may carry nothing at all.","spans":[],"direction":"ltr"},{"type":"heading2","text":"Does Claude Leave Watermarks on Work Your Team Wrote? Yes.","spans":[],"direction":"ltr"},{"type":"paragraph","text":"This is the part with the most direct consequences for communications teams, and it is the part the coverage has mostly buried. Anthropic is explicit that a mark means Claude processed the content, not that Claude authored it. People use these tools constantly to proofread, translate, summarize, reformat, and convert. Every one of those uses can leave a mark on writing that a person produced.","spans":[{"start":175,"end":184,"type":"em"},{"start":214,"end":222,"type":"em"}],"direction":"ltr"},{"type":"paragraph","text":"Play that forward. A colleague writes a bylined op-ed, then asks Claude to check it for typos. Marked. Your team writes a bilingual announcement in English and has Claude produce the Spanish version. Marked. An analyst builds a market report in a document and converts it to a graphic. Marked. In each case a human did the thinking, made the judgment calls, and put their name on it. The mark cannot tell you that, and it will sit there next to a mark on something nobody read before it went out.","spans":[],"direction":"ltr"},{"type":"paragraph","text":"So any internal policy built on the sentence \"if we detect a mark, it's AI content\" is going to punish exactly the wrong work, meaning the carefully edited, carefully checked, carefully translated work, while missing the genuinely careless material that got paraphrased on its way out the door. We wrote about this shape of problem when we covered agentic AI and what it means for communicators. The interesting question is never what the tool did. It is who was accountable for the result.","spans":[{"start":348,"end":394,"type":"hyperlink","data":{"link_type":"Web","url":"https://marinopr.com/insight/agentic-ai-what-it-means-for-communicators-and-bra","target":"_blank"}}],"direction":"ltr"},{"type":"paragraph","text":"And since a piece about watermarks that pretended otherwise would be a little absurd: this one carries a mark. I worked on it with Claude, the way I would with anyone else on my team, and I read every line before it went out with my name on it. That is the argument, and I would rather show it than assert it.","spans":[],"direction":"ltr"},{"type":"heading2","text":"What the Marks Miss","spans":[],"direction":"ltr"},{"type":"paragraph","text":"We would rather be useful than impressive here, so: these marks are a weaker signal than the headlines suggest, in both directions.","spans":[],"direction":"ltr"},{"type":"paragraph","text":"A mark can vanish. Alex Cui of GPTZero told Search Engine Journal that heavy paraphrasing defeats text watermarks, and free tools have already stripped comparable marks from a competing system. Short passages do not carry enough text to hold a reliable signal. File records disappear the moment someone screenshots the image, re-saves it in another format, or runs it through a tool that rewrites the file. So the absence of a mark tells you close to nothing.","spans":[{"start":39,"end":65,"type":"hyperlink","data":{"link_type":"Web","url":"https://www.searchenginejournal.com/anthropic-claude-watermarks-eu-ai-act-code/585355/","target":"_blank"}}],"direction":"ltr"},{"type":"paragraph","text":"A mark can also mislead in the other direction, as above. It is a real attempt at a hard problem and it is better than nothing. But we have been consistent that these tools are worth using and worth watching closely. Back in 2023 we noted that ChatGPT and Bard would invent citations that sound right and aren't, and when we looked at the first wave of ChatGPT plugins we said plainly that nobody yet knew how reliable they were. We think that is backwards, and we have been making that argument for a while. Nobody actually wants work that no one checked. The value was never autonomy, it was supervised leverage: the output of ten workstreams with the accountability of one trusted partner.
