What’s the Difference Between ChatGPT and Bard?
By Andrew ZimmerWhat’s the Difference Between ChatGPT and Bard?
Artificial intelligence (AI) chatbots are becoming increasingly popular for a wide ranging array of tasks from research, brainstorming, to drafting content, to just entertainment. Two major players in this field are ChatGPT and Bard. But how are they actually different, let’s take a look:
What are ChatGPT and Bard?
ChatGPT and Bard are both AI chatbots designed for a variety of tasks. ChatGPT is powered by OpenAI's Generative Pre-training Transformer-3 (GPT-3) language model, while Bard is powered by Google's LaMDA language model.
What are the Key Differences Between ChatGPT and Bard
- Text Generation and Natural Language Understanding: ChatGPT excels at generating text and is known for its creative content capabilities, such as generating poems, scripts, and musical pieces.
- Real-Time Data Access: Bard has access to real-time data from the internet, providing it with a more up-to-date understanding of the world.
What are people using ChatGPT or Bard For?
- Education: Both chatbots can be used in educational settings to help students learn new concepts, answer questions, and provide feedback.
- Entertainment: ChatGPT and Bard can entertain users through storytelling, gaming, and sharing jokes.
- Sparking Creativity: Do you need 20 ideas on a blog post? Do you need a twist for your short story? These tools can spout out literally endless thought starters to spark your own thinking.
- Finding Flaws: Wonder how your writing could be stronger or more persuasive? Ask Chat GPT to poke holes in your essay or Bard to find the flaws in your thinking. It will often bring up something you haven’t thought of.
How Do You Get The Most Out Of ChatGPT and Bard
From what we’ve been able to utilize these tools for, chatbots are best if you treat it how it’s named, through chatting. Talk to it like you would a person to whom you are making a request, correct it when it’s wrong, ask it to make specific changes. If you treat it like a request engine or a Google search, you will get mediocre, bad, or misleading results. If you work with it, you can get some really interesting and useful results.
Does It Cost Money to use ChatGPT or Bard?
ChatGPT currently offers a free version, making it accessible for users on a budget. Bard's pricing details are not mentioned in the article, so it's crucial to research and compare the costs associated with both platforms before making a decision.
You do get access to newly released products and priority access to the platform while it’s busy with a $20 subscription to ChatGPT that seems very worth it.
Are Chat GPT or Bard ever wrong?
Yes. Both do what has been referred to as producing “hallucinations.” This means that if you ask for citations on something, they might just invent them and give you a bunch of things that sound right but aren’t.
Also, occasionally they are just wrong, or the details they present very convincingly as fact are missing some very key nuances. In short, both can still be mistaken and shouldn’t be relied on for a final product.
Verdict: Which is better, ChatGPT or Bard?
For now ChatGPT has the edge. It provides a much more natural chat exchange and seems to understand the root needs more than the surface needs that Bard returns. While the possibility of having access to real time information is a huge advantage, the interface doesn’t seem to amount to much more than a Google search would at this point.
We fully expect things to change and evolve VERY quickly in this space and while these are two of the biggest players now, we haven’t been able to test other big name tools like Co-Pilot yet, and surely there are countless more on their way.
